After years of dreaming and months of planning we’re finally here! As Bob said in his last post we had to lighten the load to get it all to fit but everything made it in one piece and the drive went smoothly. YEAH!
Quite a few people have asked about our “To Do List”. Well, let me tell you, the list is about a mile long.
To Do List — The Short Version
Set Up Tipi
Lodging should ALWAYS be first on any list. Until we get the tipi set up we’re temporarily “camping” in our trusty Kodiak canvas tent. One of our favorite things to do is camping (good thing, huh?) so the base camp is in pretty good order.
Setting up the tipi includes:
- Put 2 more coats of linseed and turpentine mix on the poles.
- Prepare the ground to create a floor for the tipi with good drainage.
- Paint some artwork on the tipi cover.
- Sew streamers for the poles.
- Sew Velcro fasteners to help seal the liner.
Storage Shed
Typical of any move we have no clue where anything is. It’s not like, “Oh, here’s all the kitchen stuff, those boxes go in the kitchen”. Or, “Here’s the bedroom boxes, take them there”.
One of our top priorities is to build a small storage shed but until we do we’re living out of a self storage unit that isn’t quite big enough. Also, the shed roof will help fill more rain barrels.
Good incentive to check this item off our list fast. Stay tuned for future posts on this one!
Solar Energy
Along with everything else, we’ll need to work on getting our solar energy up and running. We don’t have a huge need for power. Some lights, running the computers, and a radio for some tunes and some news.
Garden Beds & Compost Bins
The soil in Southern Missouri is, well, how to I put this? NOT GREAT! Sandy soil and LOTS of rocks! We’re planning to do raised beds for our gardens. Any gardener will tell you — compost is key! All fall and winter we’ll be gathering organic matter and putting it in multiple compost bins. That’s one of the main reasons to move here now instead of in the Spring. By time Spring comes it would be too late to get all this done! More to follow!
Address, Phone, Internet, Insurance, and Miscellaneous
Because we purchased vacant land we need to go to the local post office and get an address assigned to us. Unfortunately you can’t do much in this world without one.
Yes… like I said before we’re going to have a cell phone so we can stay in touch with friends and family, use in an emergency, report an accident, whatever.
Still working on the Internet connection. It’s spotty out here but fortunately there’s a “hot spot” in town that we can use until we get it figured out.
Of course, there’s things like switching car insurance and other miscellaneous stuff to keep us busy too.
Welcome to the modern homesteading life!
