When you build your cabin, make sure there are protected ledges under the eaves. Barn swallows will nest there and they eat a blue TON of bugs! And they’re funny as heck to watch. I have had a pair of nesting barn swallows on my condo patio for 5 years now and they are the best thing ever. The bug population flying into the house when I go in and out of the patio doors is significantly down, and my indoor cats will watch them for hours. Plus the annual Baby Barn Swallow Flying School is great fun to watch, too.
I agree with the above poster. I live in WV and have phoebes nesting every year on the ledge we have up around the eaves of our house. They average two nests a year and become quite tame. I always know spring is around the corner when the phoebes start nest-building!

Thanks for the advice. Hubby and I have been discussing how to encourage the various birds to stick around because we know they’ll eat a lot of bugs.
